Nature put on its fierce display once again in Panama, which saw the whole country in a state of panic. October 9, 2026, the earth moved in the Central American country. It was reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) that a very powerful quake, which measured 7.7 on the Richter scale, had hit the Azuero Peninsula of Panama.
That natural disaster in turn brought about a breakdown across the nation as people rushed out of their homes for safety. At that time, around noon, the earthquake’s epicentre was at a relatively shallow depth, which made the tremors very intense and destructive. Right after the main shock, a large aftershock of magnitude 6.6 hit.
followed by dozens of smaller tremors recorded subsequently. This caused terrified residents to abandon their homes and offices, spilling out onto the streets under the open sky.
The severe earthquake caused significant damage to infrastructure across the country. In several coastal areas, old buildings partially collapsed, and vehicles were crushed beneath debris.
Cracks on major roads and landslides disrupted transportation, while preventive measures in Panama City temporarily halted flight operations at the international airport and led to the evacuation of patients from hospitals to safer areas. Power and communication systems were also affected in multiple provinces.
The administration quickly launched rescue and relief operations. According to initial reports, several people sustained injuries and were rushed to hospitals. Fortunately, there is no major tsunami threat, though a high alert remains in effect for coastal regions. The government is closely monitoring the situation.
